"DuDe WhAt's WrOnG wItH yOuR aRm?"

THIS IS GOING TO BE LONG-You've been warned!
For those of you that haven't heard yet, Kaleb broke his arm on Tuesday during his football game. Here's the story, from my point of view. :)
It's the second game of the season and they are playing the Falcons, and they are sure they are going to win, (because they have beat them every year). The game starts and Kaleb is playing middle linebacker. Kaleb gets the punt return, and fumble recovery. The next series, we are defense and on the first play, Kaleb tackles the guy with the ball, and someone falls on his arm. They all get up and as Kaleb is running back to the huddle JJ says to him "Dude what's wrong with your arm?" Then comes the blood curling howling as he is running off the field, holding his arm, and calling for the medic. The EMT's were very quick to respond. They put him in a cardboard sling, and then Sam took him to the ER, while I was calling around finding help for Talan and Tycee.
As he was getting fixed up by the EMTs the rest of the defense is still on the field "taking a knee" wondering what happened, and how bad it is. I looked over there and half of them were crying right along with me. He has a great group of kids on his team and some of them have been playing with him all three years, so they are close. I found one of my friends to come and pick up Tycee, and she also picked up Talan from football practice. They stayed the night at her house so I didn't have to worry about them. Thanks Jess. We ended up going to an Urgent Care for x-rays, and then onto the ER to wait, and wait, and wait.....Almost four hours after he broke it, they took us back.
When people would ask him what happened he would say "I broke my arm" then they would ask him how he did it, and let's remember he is in full uniform minus his helmet, and he would say "football". All I can say is; ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.
There was a nurse there that helped speed things up for us, seeing as you could tell right on the x-ray that it was indeed broken. We went back, he got an IV (the worst part of the whole thing, according to Kaleb) but then he got the Morphine, and an anti-nausea med. and then they put him to sleep. Soon after he fell asleep they came in to perform the Reduction, in simpler terms to set his arm. OUCH! Sam stayed in to watch, I almost passed out when they put the IV in, so I was banished. He was asleep but Sam said he was still moaning and whimpering while they were doing it. They had to pull his arm apart and reset the bones together. Then they had to x-ray it and make sure it was where it was suppose to be. Good enough. We were finally discharged with instructions to call the Orthopedist in the morning.
The doctor we took him to came highly recommended. He is the only Pediatric Orthopedist in town, and we really like him. He looked at the x-rays and said that it looked great (when he finally saw the after x-rays) he put a cast on it and we are taking him back in next week for x-rays to make sure things haven't shifted. If the bones stay the way they are, he should heal without any problems. If things shift, then we are talking possible surgery. One of the brakes is really steep and so that is the one they are worried about. He picked a red cast in honor of his football team, and he even told me that no one could sign it until "the team" had signed it. (he did give in with much pressure from his sister)
The only thing that Kaleb was upset about was being out for the rest of the season. Sam told him he could help him coach the offense, specifically the quarterbacks. When he went to practice on Wed. he helped them coach. The team mom made a sign that all of the players signed, it was sweet. One of the boys told him they were retiring his jersey so no one else will be able to have it until he comes back next year. (Yes I was crying) Then the boys all lined up to sign his cast. I think it is very sweet how close these boys have gotten. We have had many phone calls checking on him, and even some treats brought over. We have some great friends, and family. Thanks to everyone. His spirits are up and he is excited about being the ball boy, with one of his friends, for the Centennial Frosh/Soph football team. He wasn't able to do it before because of practice, but now he's available. I hope you enjoy the pics.

Poor poor Kaleb!! I couldn't focus too closely on the x-ray cause it made me a bit queasy...that just tells you what a weak stomach I have. Hope everything is on the up and up!! That is not fun at all!!

Kaleb is feeling okay. He has a hard time just sitting still. Today he dunked his cast in the tub so we may be in the doctor's office tomorrow getting that replaced. I'm not going to smell it for 7 1/2 more weeks. It's actually too bad because it's got alot of signatures on it already. Oh well. Thanks for your comments.

Feel better soon, Kaleb! And where did he get his nickname, Sunshine? Is it from Remember The Titans?

Yes, the long haired hippie quarterback from California. Last year there were 2 Kalebs on his team so, he got the nickname.

Kaleb, I broke my arm just like that! I remember telling Brandon. "I could go sledding down my arm." It was "bent". I hope you're feeling better. I'm sorry you don't get to finish your football season.
